Horner-Markwick Library

Architect:   John Miller + Partners
Completed:  2004

A libary for the 21st century

From Sidgwick Hall

The Homer Markwick Library, is named in commemoration of "Squizzie" Horner and Emily Markwick, two former librarians of the College, who, at different times, helped fund the expansion and development of the library. The new building refers to the old in its vaulted ceilings, in maintaining the axes set up by the Yates Thompson library, in the colour scheme, and in the generous top-lighting. The double-height drum space extending onto Sidgwick Avenue serves as a browsing area for looking at current periodicals and newspapers.

On this ground floor, we have the main entrance and enquiry area, Reference and Modern Languages collections, study spaces, including space for visitors, an IT suite with 9 PCs connected to the network, scanning facilities and a photocopying room. The IT suite has been titled “The Wolfson Room” to mark a generous donation from The Wolfson Foundation.
