The Gardens Team

The Newnham College gardens team is one of the smaller departments in the College but has the largest area to cover. The team are responsible for the propagation and “growing on” of plants, weeding and pruning the vast herbaceous borders, tree care and maintenance and mowing mile-upon mile of lawn.

Lottie Collis

Charlotte Collis - Lottie

Lottie joined Newnham in January 2016 and now heads up the Garden Team. Before coming to Newnham Lottie was the Deputy Head Gardener at Christ’s College, Cambridge. She has a keen interest in plants and in particular irises and orchids.

Andrew Ward - Andy

A popular member staff and a key part of the Garden Team, Andy Ward has been with the College for approximately 24 years, joining after an apprenticeship with the City Council. Andy is a quiet unassuming person who gets on with his work and enjoys what he does. He is very much behind all the tubs and planters that adorn the Porters’ Lodge and the garden doors as well as the hanging baskets. He plays a lead role in looking after the herbaceous borders and the work in the glasshouses propagating and growing much of what we need. After a hard day in the garden Andy heads of home to tend to his many tanks of tropical fish.

Chris Thurgood

Christopher Thurgood - Chris

Chris joined the team in the summer of 2015 and is currently being trained in all areas of the garden and is starting some of his machinery and professional training. Chris has spent most of his working life in stock control and logistics. Chris is a keen gardener with many year’s experience. Chris has previously won the “Best in Show” for the Cambridge City Council, Best Council House Garden Competition. Chris specialises in conifers. He also has a keen in interest lepidoptera (which means “scaly winged” aka…moth watching) and he operates a moth trap.
