"The Senior members are very approachable, and most importantly, I have seen that their main concern is the welfare of their students." Karina Ishani

Visiting with your family

Visiting the College with your family

Newnham’s priority is to be a place of education, learning and research. This requires a quiet environment but we are pleased to welcome alumnae and their children to the College if they are visiting Cambridge. We would ask that you please contact Jo Cooney in the Development Office in advance to arrange a suitable date and time. As you would expect we would ask that you take full responsibility for your children and remain with them at all times. Please also ensure that they do not make a lot of noise and respect our lovely surroundings (for example, please do not let them throw sticks and other objects at the fountain or into the pond in the sunken memorial garden; something which seems to happen regularly on family visits!).

College is proud of the fact that many of its alumnae choose to have families and as a result have worked with the Roll Committee to establish the NewnhamRoll Mums Forum. This group aims to have two events each year; the first is a family picnic in Newnham Gardens to which children are very welcome and at which specific activities suitable for their age will be organized; the second is an annual lecture to which alumnae interested in exploring mothercraft, work/life balance, education and outreach are encouraged to come (without their children).

Those who are returning for their reunions at Commemoration or Alumni Weekend are also welcome to bring their children to enjoy the gardens on the Saturday afternoon. Again we would ask that their parents remain with them at all times and ensure that they are considerate of others who may be returning without children and who wish not to be disturbed by noise. We would also ask that children do not come in to the buttery for tea for the same reason and that they leave the grounds of the College by 5.30pm - well before the reunion dinner. There will also be other events from time to time where families are invited and this will be made clear on the invitation.
