"Newnham is very good at looking after its students. You're not just a number at Newnham, you're actually a person." Sameera Abas

Work opportunities

Could you offer a current Newnham student work experience or employment?

“I work-shadowed Sue Owen at DFID; I attended a committee meeting with her, sat in on a video-conference with a representative of the DFID country office in Kenya, and spoke to women involved in HIV/AIDS research, which is my specialty. The work shadowing was very helpful and gave me a great insight as to what career I might pursue after Newnham.”

Sue Kiragu, graduate
Competition for even unpaid work is fierce, yet experience - whether a day's work shadowing or a longer term placement within an organisation - is crucial to helping current students make informed choices.  Occasionally alumnae also draw to our attention to vacancies within organisations they are involved with; this helps recent graduates who are trying to make the increasingly difficult transition to paid employment.

We have launched this page to build up a pool of opportunities open to
our students. If you're able to add to it, we would be very happy indeed to hear from you. Please email roll@newn.cam.ac.uk with details, following this template:
  • Sector, e.g. publishing, information technology, education
  • Location of the work experience
  • Your organisation, with a web link if applicable
  • Details of the work experience or opportunity offered, including length of placement and any remuneration/expenses available
  • Student requirements, e.g. specific degree subject, technical knowledge, interests
  • Deadline for applications
  • Contact details

Sector: Asian equity fund management

Location: London

Organisation: Tiburon Partners, an FSA regulated fund management firm. We specialise in investing in the equity markets of Asia and manage several funds with strong track records. The intrinsic attraction of Asian investment and the numbers we are printing mean that we have a growing number of investors. These investors range from individuals to major institutions based all round the world.

We are looking for candidates to join our marketing effort as full-time employees. Responsibilities will include servicing our existing clientele but also developing the coverage we have with potential investors, again on a global basis. There are currently 12 of us here at Tiburon Partners; consequently, for the right candidate the challenges and the attendant opportunities will be significant.

Given the growth of our business we would ideally like the succesful candidate to start immediately. Consequently, we are particularly interested in talking to those who have already graduated and are ready to take the world by the scruff of the neck. That said, we are also interested in talking to those who graduate or finish their courses in the summer.
