"Newnham boosted my sense of self-worth, and gave me the confidence to say Yeah, I can go out in front of ten million people and talk nonsense." Claire Balding

Amazing women

Newnham women achieve extraordinary things

Hilary Willmer (NC 1960) - CROP Chair of Trustees

CROP, the only UK organisation working specially with parents of children who are being sexually exploited, was founded in 1996 by a mother (Irene Ivison) whose daughter was pimped and then murdered by a man buying sex. CROP aims to support parents to be active agents in caring for their children and mobilising action against child sexual exploitation at local and national levels. I have been chair of CROP since its beginning and have seen it grow to a nationally respected organisation, with ten frontline workers and more volunteers. We need more money and more young engaged trustees. More details can be found at www.cropuk.org.uk.

Kathy Love, BA, LLM (NC 1974) - Barrister

During the 300 years that southwest France was governed by the English crown (1152-1453), a sophisticated and lucrative industry developed supplying Gascon wines to England. As a commercial lawyer, I am interested in how this industry addressed the practical legal problems that arise in all commodity trading (contracts of sale, shipping arrangements, credit and payment, etc.). This is an ambitious (possibly crazy!) project, since the survival of original source material is patchy and records are not always easy to locate or interpret; but viewing this period through the eyes of a legal practitioner is fascinating and may, I hope, be revealing.

Claire King (Nortcliff, NC 1990) - Author

Joining Procter & Gamble as a graduate was an excellent foundation, but setting up their Ukrainian business aged 24 - that was an adventure! Later, as a management consultant, I loved the variety of transformation projects we ran. By 30 I wanted it all: challenging and rewarding work and more time for life. So we moved to the Pyrenees, married, had children, turned the barn into gîtes and I set up my own business helping organisations work collaboratively. In the morsels of time left over I wrote my first novel. The Night Rainbow will be published by Bloomsbury, March 2013. See www.claire-king.com for more information.
