Newnhamites in action

Elizabeth (Libby) Richards (NC 2005) was the Cambridge Tweeter for the University Boat Club. She covered the Boat Race on Twitter from the weigh-in stage all the way through to the end of the race.

Alumna Suzy Menkes-Spanier OBE (NC 1963), Style Editor of the International Herald Tribune, interviewed Lady Gaga during Paris Fashion week in March. Watch the interview here. 

Jenn Ashworth (NC 2000) was selected as one of the 12 best debut novelists by The Culture Show panel for her novel A Kind of Intimacy. Publishers were asked to submit what they considered to be their most outstanding novels from the past couple of years and the panel of five judges considered Jenn to be one of the 12 most promising young writers.

Second Lieutenant Harriet Haslam-Greene (NC 2006) is currently serving with The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Caribiniers and Greys) and is being deployed to Afghanistan to serve with 4 SCOTS (The Highlanders), 4th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Two Newnhamites represented Cambridge in Oxford and Cambridge Women’s Boat Races at Henley. Ruth Blackshaw, a 2nd year Geographer, was in the CUWBC crew which lost by one length to Oxford. Silvia Breu, a graduate student completing her PhD in Computer Sciences, was in the Blondie (CUWBC reserve) crew which won following Oxford’s disqualification from their race. The trophies were presented by Newnham alumna, world Champion and Olympic bronze medallist Anna Watkins (Bebington).

Professor Helen Elisabeth Higson (NC 1979 English) was awarded an OBE for services to Higher Education. She is Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Higher Education Learning and Management, Aston University.

Dr Katie Petty-Saphon (NC 1969 NSB, Associate Fellow 2008) was awarded an MBE for services to Medicine. Katie is Director of the Medical Schools Council, Dental Schools Council and of the Association of UK University Hospitals.

Sister Gemma Simmonds (NC 1977), Associate 2000-10 (Vice-President 2008-10) presented Prayer for the Day on Radio Four on Saturday 5 February and for the following week.
