Cantabrigian couple leave generous legacies to their respective Colleges

The joint estate of Barbara Bain (NC 1936) and her husband Walter (Jesus College) was divided this summer after the couple decided to remember their respective Colleges in their wills.

The 1936 Register that Barbara signed when she matriculated, pictured, reports that Barbara, who read Economics, was born in Lincolnshire, was the daughter of Bruce Scott Gibbon, ‘tea planter’ and Gladys Scholes, ‘Bridge Hostess’.

After graduation Barbara was Private Secretary to the Dutch Prime Minister and then pursued a career in East Asia before she returned to work in Human Resources in the UK.

Newnham and Jesus have now jointly nominated Barbara and Walter for posthumous membership of the Guild of Cambridge Benefactors.

Penny Hubbard, Development Director, said: “Legacies are a crucial support for the College and we are very grateful to all our alumnae who make the decision to remember Newnham in their will.”

Our new legacy brochure will shortly be mailed to all alumnae between the age of 55 and 80.

Please get in touch if you fall outside this age range and would like a copy.
