New play Mountains based on the bestselling book Sweet Mandarin by alumna Helen Tse MBE comes to Stratford Circus Arts Centre

Helen Tse MBE (NC 1996) would like to invite all Newnhamites to watch Mountains and join her for pre-theatre drinks at 18:00, Friday 20 April 2018 at Stratford Circus Arts Theatre.

Mountains, adapted from Helen Tse’s bestselling family memoir Sweet Mandarin, is now a culinary delight on stage. Having sold out at the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester, the play runs at Stratford Circus Arts Centre in London from 18- 21 April 2018, before moving onto 10 other cities.

This evocative new play tells the extraordinary and heartbreaking story of the women behind the famous Manchester restaurant Sweet Mandarin, a family held together with one lifeline- food. As the first ever true story told about a British Chinese family, the play uses the theme ‘we cook what we can’t say’ to finally allow the East Asian voice to be heard. The lead roles are played by East Asian actresses and actors, the music by the talented Ruth Chan, the director the sought after Jennifer Tan, the playwright the award winning In-Sook Chappell and the book by the first British Born Chinese author. It’s a first on many levels and the uplifting play can truly change lives as well as Chinese cuisine and its history.
