As President of the Newnham Associates I am proud to be part of this incredible group of 60 alumnae. Among the Associates you will find successful women from a wide range of backgrounds – accounting, academia, architecture and the arts, civil service and business, finance, the law, media, medicine, not-for-profit organisations and venture capitalism, amongst many other fields. What we have in common is our passion for Newnham as a place of education for outstanding women.
We support the College by drawing on our diverse experience, expertise and contacts. Our main focus is careers guidance for current Newnham students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and for younger alumnae. We run workshops for students ranging from confidence-building to CV-writing and interview techniques and our website allows both students and alumnae to search for Associates who can help with advice, work-shadowing or networking. We have a ‘subject point of contact’ Associate for most Cambridge subjects, enabling all students and alumnae to make contact directly with one Associate who will help them find the most appropriate Associate to help them.
We also help with exciting new initiatives and fundraising for the College – for example we are funding an Open Day this year and have contributed to essay prizes and various student initiatives in the arts and in sport. Three of our members also serve on the Governing Body as Associate Fellows.
We are always very happy to be contacted by Newnham students who feel we could help them or by alumnae interested in joining us. Either way, you will soon be able to appreciate what a wonderful and friendly group of amazing women the Newnham Associates are.
Brigid Sutcliffe (NC 1977), President of the Associates
Apply to be an Associate
If you like the sound of being a Newnham Associate, why not apply? All alumnae are eligible to make an application – you just need to be enthusiastic about the future of Newnham and able to give some time. We elect new Associates at the AGM every November and you would usually be expected to serve for 5 years with a likely renewal for a second 5 years. To find out more about how to apply read the information on our website.
The Honorary Associates are a group of Associates who have come to the end of their term but are keen to keep connected and involved. They are listed in the Associates directory and continue to help students and alumnae with their careers. They are also active in other Associate and wider College initiatives.
