Extreme Demands: From the Right to Vote to Today’s Issues

Who are the extremists? And how does our perception of extremism change over the course of history? Newnham College considers the issue through the lens of attitudes to women’s education and empowerment, with a session of three short talks.

Who were the extremists of history – the women who wanted an education, or the men who rioted in protest? The women who wanted the vote, or the people who thought it was absurd? Why did contemporaries see the founders of Save the Children as extremists? Speakers include historian Dr Gill Sutherland and the Right Honorable Fiona Mactaggart, Chair of the Fawcett Society. Come and see the gates that were stormed in an anti-women riot, and discuss which of today’s issues will be seen as extreme in the future.

The event includes three short talks (c.20 mins) together with a brief tour of Newnham College: people can attend one or more of the talks. The event will be followed with tea and a chance to discuss the issues raised.

This event is open to all, and does not require pre-booking.
