‘From Hate Speech to Fake News’: Newnham Conversation for Alumni Festival 2017

We welcome Newnham Fellow Professor Rae Langton and Caroline Diehl, MBE (NC 1975) for the ‘Newnham Conversation’. The Conversation is a relaxed and informal discussion event that showcases and celebrates the fascinating lives and thoughts of the Newnham community. This year the Conversation looks at the ways in which the idea of ‘free speech’ is evolving and changing in the twenty-first century.

Professor Rae Langton is Knightbridge Professor of Philosophy elect (the first woman to receive the honour), and Fellow at Newnham College. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013, and to the British Academy in 2014. She was named as one of Prospect Magazine‘s 50 ‘World Thinkers 2014’. Working in moral and political philosophy, history of philosophy, metaphysics, philosophy of law and feminist philosophy, Rae has a long-standing interest in speech act theory and social justice.

Caroline Diehl is Founder and Chairman of the UK Community Channel, the world’s first co-operative TV channel, owned by its community shareholders and supported by the UK media and digital sector. She has 23 years of experience as the founder and Chief Executive of Media Trust, the communications charity.
