London Event: Monday 30 April 2018

2018 is the centenary of the first women gaining the right to vote. This was the result of the tireless efforts of the women’s suffrage movements, and of course, of Newnham’s co-founder and leader of the suffragist cause Millicent Garrett Fawcett. We were delighted when it was announced that Dame Millicent is to be the first woman to be honoured with a statue in Parliament Square, which will be unveiled on 24 April.

The members of the Roll Committee who organise London gatherings (Annette Spencer (NC 1988), Jenny Staples (NC 1965) and Rachael Ashton (NC 2007) felt it would be very special to hold an event to celebrate Millicent Garrett Fawcett, and we are all delighted to announce that will be holding an evening reception and talk at the House of Lords on Monday 30 April. We owe a debt of thanks to Baroness Jean Coussins for sponsoring the event, enabling us to use to the River Room, a truly historic venue.

Dr Gill Sutherland, Fellow Emerita and former Director of Studies in History is a noted authority on Millicent Garrett Fawcett, and we are very grateful that she has agreed to give us a talk on Dame Millicent in these hugely symbolic surroundings, before we make the 5 minute stroll around the corner to see the statue in its new home in Parliament Square.

The programme for the evening is as follows:

6pm – 7pm: Drinks and canapé reception

7pm – 7.50pm: Talk on Millicent Garrett Fawcett by Dr Gill Sutherland

7.50pm: (Optional) Viewing of the Millicent Garrett Fawcett statue in Parliament Square

This event costs £30 to cover the cost of refreshments and staffing.
