Academic and academic-related posts at Newnham
The college offers several different sorts of academic post, depending on the holder's other responsibilities and the time commitment he or she is willing to make.
- College lecturers. The College may advertise for a full-time College Lecturer (CTO), or may appoint holders of University Teaching Officer (UTO) posts or of equivalent posts in recognised "non University institutions" (NUIs), such as one of the MRC centres. CTO College lecturers are generally expected to teach twelve hours a week in Term, or to Direct Studies for their subject and teach nine hours as week. UTO College Lecturers normally teach six hours (Lecturer A), or 4 hours (Lecturer AA). Women appointed as College Lecturers will also be elected as Fellows of the College.
- Associate lecturers. From time to time, the College appoints Associate Lecturers in subjects where we are short of teaching provision. Associate Lecturers are members of the Senior Combination Room, and are normally expected to teach a minimum of three hours a week. They need not hold a UTO post, but are expected to hold a senior research position in one of the University departments, or in one of the NUIs (see above).
- Special supervisors. Supervisors of undergraduate students who take on a significant recurrent commitment are eligible for appointment as a Special Supervisor. Such appointments will be on the recommendation of the Director of Studies. Special Supervisors are members of the Senior Combination Room, and are allowed to take meals in Term, and to attend various College functions.
College Teaching Officer (CTO) posts are widely advertised when available: if none is listed on this website then applications will not be accepted.
University Teaching Officers and those in recognised non-University institutions, who are interested in a teaching position at Newnham, should explore possibilities with the Senior Tutor.
