Graduate Study at Newnham

Newnham College is a college for women. Its distinguished graduate student alumnae include:
  • Carole Angier MLitt FRSA
  • Rosalind Franklin PhD
  • Dorothy Hill PhD FRS
  • Dorothy Hodgkin PhD FRS
  • Brigid Hogan PhD FRS
  • Ottoline Leyser PhD FRS
  • Brenda Milner PhD FRS
  • Henrietta Moore PhD FBA FRS
Newnham has about 150 graduate and postgraduate students, most of whom are working on PhD research or are on one-year taught courses for the MPhil, MBA or LLM. We also have a small but important number of students taking Diploma, PGCE, M.Ed. and M.St. courses or finishing their Clinical Veterinary or Medical studies.

The graduate community is supported by the Graduate Tutor, Dr Liba Taub, Deputy Graduate Tutor Dr Claire Cockcroft, and Assistant Graduate Tutors Dr Catherine Seville and Dr Augusta McMahon. On arrival each student is assigned to one of these Tutors: Liba Taub (Arts and Social Sciences), Claire Cockcroft (Sciences and Clinical Vets and Medics), Augusta McMahon (USA students), Catherine Seville (LLM).

Newnham College is well situated. It is opposite many of the Faculties and Departments (English, Modern and Medieval Languages, History, Law, Criminology and Classics) and is a short walk or cycle ride from the main Science and Engineering Departments. It is a short walk from the city centre with its shops, cafes, the Arts Theatre, Arts Picturehouse and nightclubs. For those who enjoy mellow and relaxing activities it is also close to punting on the Cam or a walk along the river to Grantchester.

Our graduates come from all over the UK and from many countries overseas, and the MCR includes students coming straight from undergraduate courses and also some mature students returning to education after work or family commitments.

Although there is no typical Newnham student our graduate students do share a few things (beyond necessarily being female): a firm commitment to living up to one's intellectual potential and an active approach to both education and life beyond education.

Newnham has excellent facilities and accommodation. We offer a number of major and minor studentships each year and are able to assist graduates with costs of research, travel to conferences, and book purchase. We also have a welfare fund to assist current students with sudden short-term financial difficulties. Please note that graduate students must provide evidence of funding to cover their courses before coming to Cambridge.
