"My first and lasting impression of Newnham is that it is an open and relaxed college, concerned for the individual." Katie Dickson

Living at Newnham

Accommodation

Newnham is able to offer College accommodation to many students for as long as they are "within terms". It is possible to stay in the same room for the length of one's course or to switch rooms from year to year.

New graduate students will be sent accommodation details once the Student Registry have confirmed their admission. Students who are confirmed during the Summer preceding the Autumn entry may find that graduate accommodation at Newnham College is full. We advise all students in this position to visit the University Accommodation Service www.accommodation.cam.ac.uk/

Graduate students live in either the Rosalind Franklin Building (the RFB, built 1995) or in one of four converted Victorian houses. The RFB has pleasant single rooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms on the upper floor, and ten self-contained flats on the ground floor. Of the four houses, two (Whitstead and Eva Smith) are in the College grounds, while the other two (2 Wordsworth Grove and Carmefield) are very close by. These houses have rooms of various sizes, also with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. The flats in the Rosalind Franklin Building were designed for graduate students with a partner, or a mother with a small child. We regret that we have no accommodation suitable for students with larger families.

All the houses and the Rosalind Franklin Building offer washing machines, telephone points and internet access. There are bicycle sheds near the Rosalind Franklin Building and spaces for bicycle parking at all the houses. There are a few car parking spaces in front of the graduate houses. In order to be allowed to park a car there, you will need to apply to the Tutorial Office for a permit, and you will need to have a good reason to have a car in Cambridge.

Costs
As well as the university fees, all Colleges at Cambridge charge a College fee (see the University Prospectus for current charges). All Colleges also charge a Kitchen Fixed Charge to cover the costs of facilities in the graduate houses, the subsidized buttery (cafeteria), and the College linen service. Newnham's KFC is among the lowest, and students who "live out" (not in College accommodation) pay a reduced charge. University and College fees must be paid at the beginning of the academic year.

Rents for College rooms fall into three bands. The A band is the most expensive and includes all rooms in the Rosalind Franklin Building. The rest of the rooms fall into bands B or C according to size. The rent of the flats is twice that of an A band single room. The rent includes heat, hot water, gas for cooking, and overhead lighting. There is a separate metered charge for any use of electrical sockets. Our rents compare very favourably with those at most other Colleges. Rent is paid termly, in advance. The rent includes internet connection charge.

Graduate Rents and Charges for 2012-2013
Band A £133.18 per week
Band B £126.41 per week
Band C £110.49 per week
Flats £299.66 per week
