At Newnham, we’ve been at the forefront of higher education for women since 1871. As a women’s college at the heart of the mixed University, we offer support and encouragement, in beautiful surroundings, to ambitious women aiming for leading careers.
Our students come from across the world and all types of school and social background. There is a lively social and cultural life, and everyone can make lasting friends here. Our approachable Admissions team encourages applications from those with the potential to succeed at Cambridge and beyond, who will enjoy our atmosphere of independent thought, mutual respect and collective responsibility.
We strongly prioritise academic achievement while seeking ambitious women who wish to excel. Our former students have reached the heights of the professions, academia, business and the arts; many take an active interest in our current students, offering career advice through regular workshops.
Newnham’s extensive site, with its beautiful Victorian architecture and stunning gardens, lies opposite the main Arts departments and is a five-minute cycle from the Science faculties. We accommodate all students on-site in rooms with high-speed internet access, and guests are welcome. All rooms cost the same, and are allocated by random ballot; many have antique furniture and lovely views (and at Newnham you can walk on the grass). Student kitchens are equipped with ovens, and we provide daily meals in our stylish modern Buttery and weekly formal dinners in College Hall.
Our library has over 90,000 books, including many by famous Newnham authors, and we host recitals and theatrical performances in our Old Labs venue. We have on-site sports fields, tennis and netball courts and Newnham Boat Club is one of the best in Cambridge. We’re proud of our students’ academic, sporting and artistic achievements.
At Newnham women are celebrated, supported and encouraged to excel.
Our Prospectus provides you with a useful overview of the College. Alternatively, all of the information is also available on this website, with sections covering student life (have a look at our film!), the application process, funding and our open events. You can also find out more about our School Liaison Initiative, including specific information for teachers. We try to answer the question, "Why Newnham?" here.
