"As a scientist I am often the only female working in the lab so I always like coming home to Newnham. I find that working with men and living with women balances out my life overall." Hetal Kirin Patel

Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA)

Like many other Cambridge Colleges, Newnham College will be continuing to use "Thinking Skills Assessment" (TSA) tests this year. These tests examine critical thinking and problem solving skills, consist of 50 multiple choice questions and last 90 minutes.

The tests will be taken in Cambridge at the time of the interviews by applicants in Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Land Economy, and Natural Sciences (Physical). Most of the tests will probably be carried out on computer, in a central testing room in the University, but depending on available space, some applicants may be asked to take a pencil and paper test at Newnham.

We would like to emphasise that these tests are only part of our assessment of your application (alongside your previous grades, school reference and performance at interview). We suggest you do not spend too much time trying to prepare for the TSA tests, but if you wish you will find a sample test, along with further information, on the TSA web site.

You will not be allowed to use dictionaries, either paper or electronic.

 BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT)

Together with other universities and all other Cambridge Colleges we also use the BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT) for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. This two-hour pen and paper test has three elements: a 60-minute test of aptitude and skills, a 30-minute test of scientific knowledge and applications, and a 30-minute writing task.

The test is administered by Cambridge Assessment and will be taken at school/college examination centres on 7 November 2012. Applicants are responsible for ensuring they enter for the BMAT by 1 October 2012. This means you must, in any event, enter for the BMAT test before submitting your application by 15 October 2012.

Information on how to enter, sample tests, and a list of centres where the test can be taken can be found on the BMAT website. Any queries about the BMAT and centre arrangements should be made to the BMAT Support Team (telephone: 01223 553366).

Details of the entry fee will be available on the BMAT website. If you are a UK student, we are concerned that the entry fee should not be viewed as a barrier to access and widening participation. Applicants in receipt of the full Adult Learning Grant (ALG), or full Maintenance Grant, or Income-Based Job Seeker’s Allowance, or Income Support, may apply for their BMAT fees to be reimbursed. Please contact the BMAT Support Team for more information.

The Cambridge Law Test

Cambridge no longer participates in the Law National Admissions Test (LNAT).  Instead, like most Colleges Newnham will require applicants for Law to take the Cambridge Law Test.

The Cambridge Law Test is designed to provide an assessment of your potential for our Law course. It will be used as an additional piece of information when making admissions decisions alongside your school/college examination results, the other information provided in your application, and, where applicable, your performance at interview.

Applicants who sit the test in Cambridge will be required to answer one question in one hour. No prior knowledge of the law will be required or expected. In most cases applicants will take the test when they are in Cambridge for interview. The College dealing with your application will contact you about the arrangements if they are using it. There is no need for you to register for this test. Applicants who are offered an interview at one of our overseas interview centres will sit a slightly different version of the test in that they will be required to answer two questions in two hours.

Further information about the test, including specimen questions and answers, are available from the Faculty of Law.

Other tests

We will hold our own written tests in Engineering, English, History, Human, Social & Political Sciences, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Psychological & Behavioural Sciences. These tests take place at the time of the interviews at Newnham College. Applicants will receive more information when we acknowledge their application.

Written work

For a number of our courses, mainly in the Arts and Social Sciences, you will be asked to send sample essays that you have written as part of your school/college courses. These should be as submitted to your teachers, and marked by them. You can check in the "Interviews" section if this applies in your subject. Please wait until your application is acknowledged before sending written work.
  • Please send photocopies, not originals, as the work will be kept in your file and not returned.
  • The copies must be clearly legible - we cannot accept faxes.
  • If you are taking an EPQ (extended project), you could submit a section of this - but please remember that the Director of Studies has lots of applications to read, so don't send too many pages!
  • Written work must be received at the College by 15 November at the latest.
