"Newnham encourages its students to be independent; I have become involved in activities outside College and have made friends all over the University and outside it." Katie Dickson

School Liaison Initiative

Introduction

Newnham is committed to encouraging applicants from a wide range of backgrounds. We believe that to make this possible, there needs to be open communication between schools and the College. This is essential when it comes to disseminating the latest relevant information, and thus breaking down the misconceptions students might have about joining us. ‘Not knowing’ about Newnham or the Cambridge admissions process should not in any way be a roadblock to potential applicants.

Our team at Newnham includes the Admissions Tutor (Dr Sam Lucy), the School Liaison Officer (Amy Aukland), and the Admissions Coordinator (Felicity Macdonald-Smith). We hope that these pages will provide you with the essential information on what sort of work we do with schools (including visits to Newnham and from Newnham), our participation with the Area Link Scheme, and resources we provide specifically for teachers.

On a wider scale, we also work closely with the access officers at the Cambridge Admissions Office. We support the Group to Encourage Ethnic Minority Applications (GEEMA) and the CUSU Target Campaign. We also fully participate in the Cambridge University Special Access scheme.

The Woolf Essay Prize 2012

In 1928 Virginia Woolf addressed the Newnham Arts Society on the subject of ‘Women and Fiction’, and from this talk emerged her seminal text, A Room of One's Own. Newnham is very proud of its place in the history of women's education, and we are delighted to announce a second year of The Woolf Essay Prize. It is designed to give students the opportunity to think and write about women in literature, history, society and culture, while developing the independent study and writing skills essential to university-level study. The Prize is open to all girls currently in Year 12 (Lower Sixth), and may be of particular interest to those studying English Literature, History, Politics, Philosophy or Sociology; but we welcome entries from interested students studying any combination of subjects. The competition has a first prize of £450 and a second prize of £300. The deadline is TUESDAY 24th APRIL 2012, and the prize-giving will take place in Cambridge at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year. Our academic panel looks forward to reading the entries!

We intend to announce the results of the Woolf Essay Prize in the Easter Term 2012
