School Liaison InitiativeA visit to your schoolIf you cannot come to Newnham, Newnham can come to you! The Schools Liaison Officer and Admissions Tutor regularly visit schools all over the country (particularly, though not exclusively, in our link areas of Birmingham, Walsall, Redbridge, Enfield, and Barking & Dagenham). These visits vary in detail, but fall under two main headings: School VisitThe Admissions Tutor and the School Liaison Officer are very happy to visit schools and colleges and to talk to students, staff, and parents (all together, or in separate groups). We can explain how Cambridge works, advise on course and college choices, and give workshops on personal statements and interviews. We can also run staff sessions to explain the selection procedure in detail and give advice on reference writing and other support. If we are invited to speak to Year 10 or 11 in a school with a Sixth Form, ideally we would also have some contact with the high-achieving Year 12: we are able to offer particularly targeted information to the older students, and answer any questions they might have. Meeting more students also makes the journey even more worthwhile!
Cambridge TastersA more extensive option is for you to host one of our Cambridge Tasters. Target groups for our Cambridge Tasters include top Y11 and Y12 students, Y13 students making post-A-level applications, Heads of Year, UCAS and Oxbridge Co-ordinators, and parents. Taster events are hosted jointly by Newnham and a school or college. The school provides the venue, and is responsible for inviting other schools and colleges in the LEA. Places depend on the capacity of the host school and are given away on a first come, first served basis. For Cambridge Tasters we normally aim for upwards of 80 students. If host schools have links with Oxford Colleges, we are happy to be involved with joint Oxbridge Tasters as well.Details of these events vary, and we are happy to try to work around specific requests. Often our current undergraduates and postgraduate students offer us their time and join us, in order to allow students, parents and teachers to find out more about life at Cambridge and the admissions process. A draft programme, based on previous Cambridge Tasters (details and timing to be agreed with the host school or college):
Many schools stay in touch with former students who have gone on to study at Cambridge, inviting them back to speak to current students about their university and application experience. Many of Newnham's undergraduates have visited their old schools, and are keen to pass on their advice! We actively encourage this kind of contact and can provide printed information and prospectuses for the undergraduates to take back to their schools, if we are asked. |
