Newnham poet talks about writing, rhyme and the empty page on Radio 4

Holly Corfield Carr

Newnham poet Holly Corfield Carr will share her poems-in-progress as part of a new BBC Radio 4 programme.

The PhD student and Special Supervisor in English will join other new poets on How to Write a Poem on Sunday, July 31 at 4.30pm.

Written by Glyn Maxwell, How to Write a Poem takes three student poets to a fictional literary festival where they ‘meet’ John Clare, Emily Dickinson, Lord Byron and John Keats to talk about writing, rhyme and the empty page.

All words spoken by Keats, Clare, Dickinson and Byron are taken verbatim from their poems, letters and diaries.

Corfield Carr (NC 2006) and the other students put their questions on writing directly to the greats and Maxwell will share his own advice on writing better poetry – from facing the blank page and developing ideas, to the intricacies of rhyme, metre, form and line break.

The second part of the programme will be broadcast on Sunday, August 7 at 4.30pm.

Both episodes will be available online shortly after they have been broadcast.
