Three Newnhamites elected as MPs in 2015 general election

Three Newnhamites have been elected as Members of Parliament in the 2015 general election.

Lucy Frazer (NC 1991) Diane Abbott (NC 1973) and Rupa Huq (NC 1990) all won their seats in their respective constituencies.

Frazer, a barrister, stood as a Conservative candidate for the first time in South East Cambridgeshire and secured 28,845 votes.

Diane Abbott comfortably retained her Labour seat in Hackney North and Stoke Newington with 31,357 votes. The broadcaster and commentator made history in 1987 when she was the first black woman elected as an MP.

Huq, a senior lecturer at Kingston University, secured the Ealing Central and Acton seat for Labour with 22,002 votes.

Sophy Gardner (NC 1988), another Newnham parliamentary hopeful, did not win her seat for Labour in Gloucester. She secured 16,586 votes to Conservative Richard Graham’s 23,837.
