Biography

Historian and writer. Studied at Sussex and Cambridge and after teaching at the University of Warwick became a Research Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge.
Imperial Bodies: the Physical Experience of the Raj. c. 1800-1947 (Polity Press, 2001).
Curry: A Tale of Cooks and Conquerors (Chatto & Windus, 2005).
The Taste of War: World War II and the Battle for Food (Penguin 2011).
Around India’s First Table: Dining and entertaining at the Rashtrapati Bhavan (2015) one of an eleven volume project designed to make the Indian Presidential palace accessible to the wider public.
The Hungry Empire: how Britain’s quest for food shaped the modern world (The Bodley Head, 2017).

Research Interests

My new book is part memoir, part social history, exploring British eating habits over several generations.
