Biography

Following a first degree in Psychology at the University of Glasgow, Susan took a Masters’ degree in Child Development at the University of London Institute of Education and a PhD at the University of London Institute of Psychiatry. She held research positions at the Institute of Psychiatry for 10 years before taking up a Lectureship at City University, London where she set up the Family and Child Psychology Research Centre. Susan is Professor Emerita of Family Research and Former Director of the Centre for Family Research as well as a Privileges of a Fellow Emerita at Newnham College.

Research Interests

The impact of new family forms on parenting and child development, specifically lesbian mother families, gay father families, single mothers by choice and families created by assisted reproductive technologies including in vitro fertilisation (IVF), donor insemination, egg donation and surrogacy. In addition to academic papers she is the author of several books, the most recent of which is We are family: what really matters for parents and children.
