Nominations for the Newnham Maths Summer School are now closed.
While there are many events run across the country to encourage young women who are studying Mathematics and Physics at A-level to read STEM subjects at university, this event specifically targets girls before they choose their A-levels.
The goal of this summer school is to show students the beauty of Mathematics and Science, and the wide breadth of career opportunities that these subjects open up in the future, in order to encourage them to choose Mathematics at A-level.
This residential is open to female students who are interested in studying Mathematics and related courses at a top university. On the residential, attendees will take part in lectures and hands-on classes taught by Cambridge academics. They will meet current students and admissions staff, as well as Newnham Maths alumnae who will share details of their career paths and other opportunities outside of academia.
The residential is free of charge, including accommodation, and all food is provided. There are funds available to cover transport costs for attendees who have spent time in local authority care, or who are eligible for free school meals.
Please email any questions to Sophie Parry (Schools Liaison & Outreach Officer) on email@example.com.
We are inviting teachers to nominate up to three Year 10 female students for the summer school. Nominated students should show some interest in taking Mathematics at A-level, or reading a Maths-related course at university.
To nominate students, please complete the teacher nomination form below.
The student consent form can be found here. This must be completed and uploaded with the teacher nomination form – applications will not be valid without it.
The following academic and widening participation criteria will be taken into account when awarding places:
GCSE predictions (including specific grades for Mathematics and Sciences)
Time spent in Local Authority Care
POLAR4 postcode – Quintiles 1 or 2
Would be the first in their immediate family to go to university
Currently in receipt of a full scholarship for schooling (if applicable)
The deadline for nominations is Wednesday 1 May 2019.
