Newnham Green Week: 24-30 October

This October, we’ll be celebrating and championing sustainability within the College, with a week of events and talks.

From the thought-provoking to the fun, we’ll be asking key questions for today.

What can we do to stand at the forefront of sustainability issues? What action can individuals and organisations take?

Climate Activism Talk

Where: Lucia Windsor Room When: Thursday 24/10, 19:00PM – 20:30PM

In this panel event, representatives from the Cambridge branches of Extinction Rebellion, Zero Carbon, Social Ecology and Amnesty International will be discussing the work and aims of their societies. There will also be time for questions so you can find out more about whatever you’re interested in. The climate change activism-based societies all look at environmental issues from different angles and have varying approaches to activism, so this is a great introduction for anyone looking to be involved!

Please note this event is currently SOLD OUT but the link to join the waiting list can be found on Facebook.

 Wall-E Movie Screening

Where: Lucia Windsor Room When: Friday 25/10, 19:30PM

We’re screening Wall-E, a cute Pixar film which also deals with important environmental questions. There will also be vegan snacks, with both gluten-free and nut free options.

Nu Wardrobe Clothes Swap

Where: Barbara White Room When: Saturday 26/10, 10:30AM – 14:30PM

Description: Newnham will be collaborating with Nu Cambridge to run its first clothes swap and share! This is a brilliant way to carry on the good work of ‘Second-Hand September’ by giving you an ethical and sustainable way to get your hands on new clothes and accessories. Going environmental doesn’t mean going without, so bring along your second-hand (but clean and in good condition) clothes to swap!

Dr Claire Barlow ‘Plastic Planet’ Talk

Where: Jane Harrison Room When: Sunday 27/10, 11:30AM – 12:30PM

In this talk, Newnham fellow Dr Claire Barlow will examine the wider environmental consequences of using plastics for packaging, and explore some of the alternatives.

Please note this event is currently SOLD OUT but the link to join the waiting list can be found on Facebook.

Earthling Ed ‘The Ostrich Effect’ Talk, followed by the Vegan Potluck

Where: Lucia Windsor Room & The Iris Bar When: Monday 28/10, 18:00PM – 19:00PM for the talk & 19:00 PM for the potluck

Join us and vegan activist and educator EARTHLING ED to uncover the hidden environmental costs of our food choices – in collaboration with the newly founded Newnham Vegan Society!

Please note this event is currently SOLD OUT but the link to join the waiting list can be found on Facebook.

Immediately afterwards there will also be a VEGAN POTLUCK! Everyone is welcome (this event is not ticketed) – vegan or just curious, and whether you want to cook an elaborate dish or just pick something up from Sainsbury’s on your way over. Vegan food only please, and gluten and nut-free options will be available. Please also keep the packaging of any purchased food and/or an ingredient list of any dishes for allergy purposes.

Pot Plant Sale with Selwyn College

Where: The Iris Cafe When: Tuesday 29/10, 10:30AM – 14:30PM

Description: In collaboration with Small and Green – a local Cambridge business – the Newnham and Selwyn College green teams are bringing you a pot plant sale like no other! Unlike your average pot plant, these will be sold with 3D-printed bioplastic pots (derived from cornstarch) – making your room a little greener, literally and figuratively. Make sure you get there early to avoid missing out – these are the must-have pot plants of Cambridge!

Sustainability Open Meeting

Where: Cynthia Beerbower Room When:Tuesday 29/10, 18:00PM – 20:00 PM

Description: Many senior members in college are going to be on hand to answer our questions about issues such as food waste, plastic use and meat consumption. You’re very welcome to come along with your questions or just to listen – this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about what the most pressing environmental issues are at Newnham. Moreover, this is a great way to start new – and continue ongoing – conversations about sustainability with college so we can work together to lower Newnham’s environmental impact.

What: Green Bop with Newnham Ents

Where: The Iris Bar When: Wednesday 30/10, 20:30PM – 23:30PM

Description: Join us for a sustainable GREEN-THEMED BOP in Newnham’s Iris Bar in collaboration with the Newnham Ents team! This will be a brilliant night to celebrate the conclusion of Green Week and let your hair down. Come along and enjoy a plastic-free night of great music, vegan snacks, specialty drinks!
