Rebels: Newnham MCR Conference 2019

Since the very beginning, Newnham College has been home to outstanding, unapologetic and radical women. Continue that tradition this May.

The Rebels Conference celebrates all that which is rebellious and challenges the status quo. We will convene women who are currently challenging their disciplines with new insights in a one-day conference at Newnham college, Cambridge on the 4th May 2019.

This conference brings together historical, political and scientific topics in a wider context where “rebel” is the common ground. Women from different backgrounds will meet to inspire and be inspired by each other.

Topics to be discussed will include

  • Refugees and activists in Athens
  • Abortion rights debates in Ireland
  • The fate of anatomical cadavers in 18th century medicine
  • The secret world of fur seals’ faeces
  • Simone Weill’s radical valuing of fatigue and failure
  • Understanding the cause of Parkinson’s disease
  • Power dynamics in Egyptian classrooms
  • A rebellious archaeologist who saved Roman London

We will end with a short piece of theatre from Heritage Theatr Cymru, celebrating one radical Victorian to inspire us today.
