Born 20 July 1934 in Ditchling, Sussex. Educated at Bedales School. NC 1953-56; research student 1956-59; Fellow & DoS in English 1960 (with a brief intermission) to 1999. Married Richard Gooder (Fellow of Clare College) 1960. Two sons and one daughter. Governor of Bedales 1964-72, and Chairman of Governors 1976-84. Governor of Dulwich College (1985-95). Director and Chairman of Newby Trust (1976-2014).

Research Interests

9th and 20th literary and cultural relations between Britain, France and America, with a special interest in Henry James. Publications: articles on Matthew Arnold, Edith Wharton, Henry Adams, Henry James, Shakespeare and Racine. Editions: Henry James, Daisy Miller and Other Stories (OUP World’s Classics, 1985); The Education of Henry Adams (Penguin Classics, 1995); Elizabeth Robins, Portrait of a Lady (Newnham College, 2002).
