Ian grew up in Northern Ireland and studied chemical engineering at Jesus College, Cambridge. He returned to a lectureship in Cambridge in 1994 after completing a PhD at the University of British Columbia, Canada.
He has been based in Cambridge since, but his interest in food processing has resulted in periods of sabbatical leave in New Zealand. Ian has a longstanding interest in undergraduate education: he is a university accreditation assessor for the Institution of Chemical Engineers and an external examiner at various universities.
Like many Ulstermen, Ian is called by his second name: he is ‘DI Wilson’ on official documents and publications.
Ian was Director of Studies in Chemical Engineering at Newnham from 1995 to 2014. He is a Fellow of Jesus College and is currently the Senior Treasurer of the University hockey club.
